Lining is the inner layer of material inside a piece of clothing, a bag, or another object. It is used to give comfort, protection, shape, or extra warmth. The word usually refers to fabric, but it can also mean any inside covering.

lining は line に名詞化の -ing が付いた語で、line は古フランス語 ligne を経てラテン語 linea「糸・線」にさかのぼる。衣服や袋の内側にもう一枚“線のように沿わせる布”という発想から「裏地」の意味になった。関連語は linear、outline。
