「admire」はラテン語 admirari に由来し、ad-「〜へ・強く」と mirari「驚く、感嘆する」に分けられる。admiration や miracle と同じ mir- の感覚を持ち、ほめるとは本来「ただ評価する」のではなく、驚きながら心を向けることだと見えてくる。
