meridian はラテン語 meridianus「正午の・南の」由来で、meridies「正午」+ -an「…に関する」から成ります。北半球では太陽が正午に南へ来るため、「正午の線」が転じて地図や地球儀の「子午線」を表すようになりました。関連語は meridional, meridiem です。
