Longitude is a system for measuring how far east or west a place is on the earth. It is shown in lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole on maps and globes. It is usually used together with latitude to give an exact location.

latitude（緯度）と必ずセットで覚える語。実際は “latitude and longitude” という並びで、GPS・地図・住所検索の座標で頻出するので、単独でなくペアで記憶すると残りやすい。long- が見えたら、地球上の南北に伸びる経線を思い出し、その線で本初子午線から東西にどれだけ離れたかを示す項目だと押さえる。線自体は北極から南極へ長く伸びるが、測っているのは東西方向の位置。latitude と逆にしないのが最大のコツ。
