解説 Definition
地球上の東西方向の位置を表す地理的な座標の一つを指す名詞です。本初子午線から東または西へ測定される角度で、地図作成や航海に使用されます。
Longitude is a system for measuring how far east or west a place is on the earth. It is shown in lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole on maps and globes. It is usually used together with latitude to give an exact location.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
latitude（緯度）と必ずセットで覚える語。実際は “latitude and longitude” という並びで、GPS・地図・住所検索の座標で頻出するので、単独でなくペアで記憶すると残りやすい。long- が見えたら、本初子午線から東西にどれだけ離れたかを示す項目だと思い出す。線自体は北極から南極へ長く伸びるが、測っているのは東西方向の位置。latitude と逆にしないのが最大のコツ。

longitude はラテン語 longus「長い」から出た longitudo「長さ」を語源とし、long- が「長さ」、-tude が性質を表します。long や prolong も同根で、東西方向へ長く測る線だと捉えると、「経度」という発想が腑に落ちます。
