ラテン語 ex-（外へ）+ cappa（マント）に由来し、古フランス語 eschaper を経て英語へ入った。捕まれたマントを脱ぎ捨てて逃れるイメージから、危険や拘束から抜け出す意味になった。
Escape comes through Old French eschaper from Latin ex- meaning “out” and cappa meaning “cloak.” The original image was of slipping out of a cloak that someone had grabbed, then getting free from danger or control.
