覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

escape が分かれば核はつかめます。in- は否定、-able は「できる」なので、inescapable は「escapeできない」= 逃れられない。unavoidable も近いですが、inescapable は「現実・結論・結果からどうしても逃げ切れない」感じが強め。an inescapable fact / conclusion / reality の形で見ると覚えやすいです。形が長いので、in + escape + able の3块に分けて認識すると定着します。

Break it into `in + escape + able`. If something is `escapable`, you can escape it, so `inescapable` is the opposite. It often appears with words like `fact`, `reality`, and `conclusion`, which helps fix the pattern in memory.

inescapable の語源・成り立ち Etymology

inescapable は in-「否定」+ escape + -able で、「逃げられる」の否定です。escape は古フランス語経由で、ラテン語系 *excappare「外套を振り切って逃げる」に通じ、escapade と同根だと知ると、「かわしても抜け出せない」という切迫感が見えてきます。

Inescapable is built from the negative prefix in- + escape + the suffix -able. Escape came into English through Old French and is usually linked to a late Latin form meaning something like "get out by throwing off a cape." The word first meant "not able to be escaped," and then developed the stronger sense of something you cannot avoid at all.
