reality はフランス語 realite、さらに中世ラテン語 realitas 由来です。realitas は real「実在の」+ -ity で、もとはラテン語 res「物・事」。real や realize と並べると、『頭の中でなく物そのものとしてあること』が現実だと見えてきます。
