実在しない、または想像上の何かのことです。創造された想像物や、実際には存在しない概念を指します。

figmentはラテン語figmentum「作られたもの」に由来し、元の動詞fingereは「形作る・こしらえる」です。figureやfictionも同根で、頭の中で形を与えて作ったものだと思うと、「想像物」という意味が自然につながります。
