illusion はラテン語 illudere「もてあそぶ・あざむく」に由来し、in-「〜に向けて」+ ludere「遊ぶ」と分けられます。現実を“遊ぶようにずらして見せる”感覚から、「錯覚」「幻想」の意味になりました。delude や ludicrous も同じ語根です。
