truth は古英語 trēowþ / trīewþ に由来し、true に当たる語幹に名詞化の -th がついた形で、もとは「忠実さ・確かさ」に近い語でした。troth や betroth も同根で、truth が単なる事実より「裏切らない確かさ」を含むと分かると腑に落ちます。
