Fabrication means a false story, invented information, or something made up to deceive people. In some technical contexts, it can also mean the process of making or building something, so the meaning depends on context.

fabrication はまず fabricate を親語として押さえると覚えやすいです。基本感覚は「何かを作り上げる」ですが、evidence, story, excuse などと結び付くと「事実でないものを作る」へ意味がずれます。-tion は行為・結果を表す名詞語尾なので、fabrication で「捏造という行為・産物」。manufacture は物を作る中立語、fiction は創作で必ずしも悪くありませんが、fabrication は現実や証拠を偽る不正の響きが強い語。fabricated evidence, media fabrication のような定番の塊で覚えると定着します。

fabrication はラテン語 fabricatio「作ること・建てること」に由来し、動詞 fabricare、さらに faber「職人」へさかのぼります。fabric- は「巧みに作る」の核で、fabricate や fabric が親類語。もとは何かを作り上げる語なので、事実まで作る感覚から「捏造」になりました。
