Prevarication means avoiding the truth by speaking in an unclear or misleading way. It is often used when someone does not want to answer honestly or directly. This is a formal word and usually suggests deliberate evasion.

prevarication は、まず動詞 prevaricate を見ておくと覚えやすく、-ion が付いた名詞形。意味は単なる excuse（言い訳）よりも、質問に正面から答えず、話をにごし、論点をずらして時間をかせぐ感じです。政治家や広報が都合の悪い質問に曖昧に答える場面と結びつけると定着しやすいです。collocation は political prevarication、respond with prevarication、accuse him of prevarication など。lie のような露骨な虚偽より、evasion に近い“はぐらかし”として覚えると混同しにくいです。

prevaricationはラテン語prae-「前に」+ varicare「股を開いて曲がって歩く」に由来します。まっすぐ進まずジグザグに歩く像から、「話をそらす・言い逃れる」の意味が生まれたと分かる語です。関連語はprevaricateとdivaricate。
Prevarication comes from Latin praevaricatio, from prae- "before" and varicare, meaning "to walk crookedly" or "straddle apart." The image is of not going straight, but turning aside. That physical idea later became a figurative one: avoiding a direct statement and speaking in an evasive way. A related word is divaricate.
