billabong はオーストラリア先住民語 Wiradjuri の bilabaŋ にさかのぼり、bila「水・川」に由来するとされるため、水の残る地形名だと腑に落ちます。後半の bang は意味未詳ですが、同根要素 bila は地名 Billibang にも見え、語の土地感覚が伝わります。
