die は古ノルド語 deyja にさかのぼるゲルマン系の基本語で、さらに祖語では「息絶える」という感覚を持っていた。接頭辞などに分かれない単純語だが、dead や death と同根で、「生の終わり」が語形を変えて動詞・形容詞・名詞になったと見ると意味のつながりが見える。
Die comes from Old Norse deyja and belongs to an old Germanic family of words about coming to an end in life. It is closely related to dead and death. Over time, English kept the same core idea while using different forms for the verb, adjective, and noun.
