deathは古英語 dēaþ 由来で、dead の語幹に名詞化の -th が付いた語に近い。dead や deadly と同根で、もともと「死んだ状態そのもの」を表したので、出来事より状態としての死を感じ取れる。
Death comes from Old English death, related to dead with the noun-forming ending -th. The same root appears in dead and deadly. It originally expressed the state of being dead, and from that it became the usual word for death as a condition or event.
