fatality は fatal と名詞語尾 -ity からなり、fatal はラテン語 fatalis「運命で定められた」に由来します。元の fatum は「語られたこと」で、避けがたく告げられた運命という感覚から「死・死亡事故」の意味へ進みました。関連語は fate、fable。
Fatality was built from fatal and the noun ending -ity. Fatal comes from Latin fatalis, meaning "decreed by fate," from fatum, originally "something spoken." The idea was of an unavoidable destiny that had been declared, and this later narrowed to the sense of death, especially in an accident or disaster.
