Fatalism is the belief that events are decided by fate and cannot really be changed by human action. It is used in philosophy, religion, and everyday discussion about people who accept bad situations without trying to change them.

fatalism はラテン語 fatum「神により語られた定め」に由来し、さらに fari「語る」にさかのぼります。fatal「運命的な」＋ -ism「主義」で、fate や fatal と同根なので、「人の運命は最初から言い渡されている」という運命論になります。
