あらゆる出来事や現象は、過去の原因や条件によって必然的に決定されるという哲学的立場です。自由意志との関係がよく論じられ、自由意志をどう捉えるかについては立場によって違いがあります。
Determinism is the idea that every event or action is caused by earlier events and conditions. It is often discussed in philosophy and science when people think about choice, fate, and cause and effect. The word usually refers to a theory or belief, not an everyday action.

determinism はラテン語 determinare「境界を定める」から来ており、de- + termin-「境界」+ -ism の形です。determine や terminal も同根で、「物事の行き先が先に区切られている」と考えると「決定論」の感触がつかめます。
Determinism is built from determine and the suffix -ism. Determine comes from Latin determinare, from de- and terminus meaning "boundary" or "end"; terminal shares the same root. The word developed the idea that events are fixed in advance, as if their limits were already set.
