古英語 dōm-dæg が語源で、doom はもともと「破滅」ではなく「裁き・判決」を意味しました。つまり doomsday は「最後の審判の日」で、deem や doom も同じく判断を表す語根を共有します。
Doomsday comes from Old English dom-daeg. In early English, doom did not first mean "destruction" but "judgment" or "decision." So the word originally meant the Day of Judgment. Doom and deem are related and both come from an old idea of judging.
