doom は古英語 dōm「裁き・宣告」にさかのぼり、ゲルマン祖語では「定められた判断」の感覚を持ちました。接頭辞より語幹 dom が核で、freedom や kingdom の -dom、deem も同系です。つまり「運命」とは、もともと下された裁定だったのです。
