If something is nonfatal, it does not cause death. This word is often used for injuries, illnesses, or accidents in medical and news contexts. It can still describe something serious, even if the person survives.

nonfatal は non-「〜でない」+ fatal「運命的な」から成り、fatal はラテン語 fatum「告げられた運命」に由来します。fate と同じく「定め」が芯なので、nonfatal は死の運命までは決めない、つまり致命的ではないと腑に落ちます。関連語は fate、fatalism。
`Nonfatal` joins `non-` meaning "not" with `fatal`. `Fatal` comes from Latin `fatum`, meaning "what has been spoken" or "destiny," the same source as `fate`.
