backlighting は back「後ろ」（古英語）+ light「光」（古英語）+ -ing の組み合わせです。文字どおり「後ろから光を当てること」で、輪郭だけが浮く見え方を表すと分かると意味が腑に落ちます。関連語は daylight, highlight です。
Backlighting is made from back, light, and the noun-forming ending -ing. Both back and light are old English words, so the term is built from native English parts rather than borrowed from another language.
