人や物事が内側にもつ根本的な性質、本来のあり方を表す名詞。人の気質なら「本性」、問題や現象なら「本質」に近く、表面的な様子ではなく奥にある特徴を説明するときに使われる。

nature はラテン語 natura に由来し、さらに nasci『生まれる』へさかのぼる。語幹 nat- は『生まれついた性質』を示すので、自然とは人が作るものではなく『生まれ備わったあり方』だとわかる。native や natal も同じ根を持つ。
Nature came into English from Old French, from Latin natura. That Latin word goes back to nasci, meaning "to be born," so the earliest idea was a person's inborn quality or the way something is born to be.
