research は re-「再び」+ search からなり、古フランス語 recercher、さらに後期ラテン語 circare「ぐるりと回って探す」に由来します。search や circle が近い親類です。「研究」が一度で終わらず、何度も周囲を探り直す営みだと見える語です。
"Research" is built from "re-" meaning "again" and "search." It came through Old French, and the older root is linked to Late Latin words meaning to go around and seek carefully, related in sense to "circle."
