解説 Definition
「less」は数量や程度・重要性などが「より少ない」ことを表し、比較の文脈で用いられます。可算名詞には本来別の比較表現が使われますが、口語ではこちらも使われることがあります。減少や控えめさを示す文脈でも広く用いられます。
Less means a smaller amount, degree, or level of something. It is used when comparing quantities, especially with uncountable nouns such as time, money, or water. In everyday English, it can also mean "not as much."
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
「more の反対」として固めると覚えやすい語。less time, less money だけでなく、less important, less likely, less expensive のように、量だけでなく程度・重要性・可能性にも広く付く。「基準より少ない・弱い方向へ動く比較語」と捉えると整理しやすい。least とセットで less→least の流れを覚えると定着しやすい。可算名詞では本来 fewer books が基本で、less books は口語寄りなので混同に注意。

less の語源・成り立ち Etymology
less は古英語 læssa に由来する古い比較の語で、接頭辞ではなく語全体に「より小さい・より少ない」が入っています。least や lesser も同根で、現代英語では little の比較として働くため、less は最初から「比べて減る」感覚を帯びた語だとわかります。
Less comes from Old English læssa, an old comparative word meaning "smaller" or "fewer." It belongs to the same family as least and lesser. Because it was already a comparative form from the start, it has long carried the sense of "reduced when compared."
