覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず反対表現の more than「〜より多い」と対で覚えると定着しやすいです。less は「量が少ない」、than は「〜より」を置く比較の合図なので、直訳の感覚は「〜より少ない」＝「未満」。数字の境界線を下回る場面でよく使い、less than 10 minutes、less than $50 のように条件や制限を述べる形で頻出します。注意点は「その数を含まない」こと。10以下なら less than 10 ではなく 10 or less / no more than 10 です。

lessは古英語lǣssa（より小さい）からゲルマン祖語*laisizに遡る。thanは古英語þonne（その時→比較の基準）から。lessは「少ない状態」を示し、thanで比較対象を導く構造。関連語：least, lesser。
Less comes from Old English lǣssa, meaning smaller or fewer, and than comes from Old English þonne. Than originally had a broader sense linked to then or to that point, but it became a marker of comparison.
