street は古英語 stræt を経た語で、起源はラテン語 strata via「舗装された道」です。strata は sternere「敷き広げる」から来ており、stratum や substrate も同根なので、street がもとは石を敷いて人が整えた道を指したと腑に落ちます。
Street comes from Old English stræt, borrowed from Late Latin strata, meaning "paved road." Strata comes from Latin stratus, the past participle of sternere, "to spread out" or "to lay down." The original image is therefore a road made by laying down paving.
