人や車両が移動するために整備された道・通路のこと。都市や地域をつなぐ交通インフラの基本単位であり、砂利道・舗装道路など様々な種類がある。比喩的に「目標へ向かう道筋」という意味で使われることもある。

road は古英語 rad「騎乗・旅」に由来し、もとは地面そのものより「馬で進む行程」を指しました。ride や raid が同根で、核には「進みながら移動する」感覚があります。road が「道路」になったのは、人が通った動きの跡が道として固定されたからです。
