swimming は古英語 swimman「泳ぐ」に名詞化の接尾辞 -ing が付いた語で、祖語はゲルマン祖語 *swimjan。核の swim-/swem- は「動く・揺れる」の感覚を持ち、swimmer や swim も同根。水中をするすると進む動きそのものが、そのまま「水泳」という名になった。
