main は古英語 maegen「力・能力」にさかのぼり、もともとの核は「強い」「力ある」です。may や might が同根で、さらに奥には「できる」を表す語根が流れています。main point が「主要な点」なのは、いちばん力を持つ部分だからだと見えます。
Main goes back to Old English maegen, meaning "strength" or "power." It is related to may and might, which come from the same old root about being able or having power. From the sense of "strongest" or "most powerful," main came to mean "chief" or "most important."
