mane は古英語 manu、さらにゲルマン祖語 *mano、印欧祖語 *mon-「首・うなじ」にさかのぼる。もともと首まわりを表す語根なので、「首の毛」から馬やライオンのたてがみの意味になった。関連語は古英語 mene「首飾り」、ラテン語 monile。
