解説 Definition
character は、小説や映画などの登場人物を指すほか、現実の人の性格・人柄・品性も表す名詞です。文脈によって「物語の中の人物」「その人らしさ」「困難な場面で表れる人格や気質」などを指し、外から見える性質や印象を幅広く表現できます。
A character is a person in a story, movie, or play. It can also mean the kind of person someone is, especially the qualities that make their personality clear.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
character はまず「人物像」を中心にまとめると覚えやすい語です。物語では a main character で「登場人物」。そこから、その人物をその人らしくしている中身へ意味が広がって「性格・人柄」になる、と一本でつなげると忘れにくくなります。strong character は「強い個性・気骨」、a man of character は「人格者」の方向。personality が性格そのものを言いやすいのに対し、character は行動に表れる人格や品性まで含みやすい、という差も意識すると定着します。なお「文字」の意味もあるので文脈判定に注意です。
Use one central image: a person in a story. A `main character` is a story person, and from there the word also grows into the idea of a person's inner nature. That is why `character` can mean both the person in the story and the kind of person someone is.

character はギリシャ語 charakter「刻みつけた印」がラテン語を経て入った語です。語根 kharassein は「刻む」で、性格も元は外に現れる「しるし」だとわかります。characterize や characteristic も同じ根です。
