Reputation is the general opinion that people have about a person, company, or place. It is built over time through behavior, quality, or past actions. A reputation can be good, bad, or mixed.

Reputation comes from Latin reputare, meaning "to think over" or "to reckon." It combines re- "again" with putare "to think, calculate, or judge." The word came to mean the judgment people form after thinking about someone again and again; compute and dispute are from the same wider root family.
