belt は古英語 belt に見えますが、さらにさかのぼるとラテン語 balteus「腰帯・剣帯」からの借用です。腰に巻いて締める帯が中心イメージなので、帯状の物や機械の回転帯にも意味が広がりました。関連語は seatbelt, beltway。
