repute はラテン語 reputare にさかのぼり、re-「繰り返し」+ putare「勘定する・考える」から成ります。reputation や dispute と同じ putare 系で、「人をあれこれ見積もって下す判断」がそのまま「評判」になる、と捉えると意味が深まります。
Repute goes back to Latin reputare, made from re- and putare, meaning "to reckon, think, judge." The same root appears in reputation and dispute. Its meaning grew from carefully judging someone or something to the judgment people commonly hold about them.
