compute はラテン語 computare に由来し、com-「一緒に」+ putare「数える・整理する」に分けられます。computation, computer が同じ語根の仲間です。ばらばらの数をきちんとまとめて勘定する感覚から、「計算する」の意味になりました。
Compute comes from Latin computare, built from com- "together" and putare "to reckon, prune, or settle an account." The basic idea was bringing numbers together and sorting them out carefully. That developed into the modern sense of calculating. Computation and computer come from the same root.
