コンピュータ、電子計算機という意味です。日本語の「コンピュータ」とほぼ同じですが、英語では机上のパソコンだけでなく、広く計算や情報処理をする機器を指します。
A computer is an electronic device that follows stored instructions to process data, perform calculations, and run programs. The term includes desktop and laptop machines as well as other programmable computing devices.

Although the Japanese loanword is familiar, remember that English computer is broader than a desktop PC: it can refer to laptops and many other programmable devices that process information. Learn it in common combinations such as use a computer, turn on the computer, computer program, and computer system. Historically, the same word could even refer to a person employed to carry out calculations.

ラテン語 computare（com-＝共に＋putare＝計算する）から。元は「計算する人」を意味し、20世紀半ばまでは人間の職業名だった。関連語：compute（計算する）、dispute（dis-＝離れて＋putare→異議を唱える）。機械が人の仕事を引き継いだ歴史がこの語に刻まれている。
Computer is formed from the verb compute and the agent suffix -er. Compute comes from Latin computare, “to calculate or reckon,” combining com-, conveying together or thoroughly, with putare, “to reckon or assess.” In English, computer originally denoted a person who performed calculations. During the twentieth century, as electronic machines took over that work, the word became the standard name for a programmable calculating and information-processing device.
