developmentはdevelop + -mentで、developはフランス語developper「包みをほどく」由来です。de-「外す」+ velop「包む」と見ると、developmentが「外から足す」より「中にあるものをほどいて現す」ことだとわかります。envelopeも仲間です。
Development is formed from develop plus the noun ending -ment. Develop came through French from a verb meaning "unwrap" or "unfold," based on the idea of removing what covers something. Because of that, development originally suggested bringing out what was already inside or hidden, not just adding something new from outside. Envelope comes from the same family of words.
