developmentはフランス語développer（dés-「反対」＋enveloper「包む」）に由来し、「包みを解く→展開する」が原義。接尾辞-mentは動作・結果を示すラテン語由来の名詞化語尾。envelopeも同根語。in developmentは「まだ展開途中」の意味。
Development comes from French developper, based on the idea of "unwrapping" or "unfolding" something. The older image is of taking away a covering so that what is inside can open out. In English, this became a word for a process that is still unfolding or taking shape. Envelope is from the same root family.
