unthinkable は un-「否定」+ think + -able で、think は古英語 thencan「心に思い描く」に由来します。thought や rethink と同根で、頭の中で形にすることすらできない、という感覚から「考えられないほどひどい・ありえない」を表します。
Unthinkable is made from un- "not," think, and -able. Think comes from Old English thencan, meaning to form in the mind or consider.
