hedgehog は hedge「生け垣」と hog「豚」を合わせた中英語の複合語で、語源は古英語系です。hedge や hog と同根で、『垣根のあたりにいて豚みたいな鼻先をしたもの』という見た目の命名が、そのままハリネズミになりました。
"Hedgehog" is a Middle English compound of "hedge" and "hog," both from Old English roots. The name probably described an animal found around hedges and thought to have a pig-like snout.
