解説 Definition
オーストラリアやニューギニアに生息する小型の卵生哺乳類。体長20～50cm程度で、背中を中心に硬い棘があり、毛も生えています。長い吻と舌を使ってアリやシロアリなどを食べます。

echidna はギリシャ語 ekhídna「毒蛇・まむし」に由来し、神話の怪物エキドナの名を経て動物名になりました。針だらけでどこか異様な姿が神話的連想を呼んだのでしょう。Echidna や蛇の属名 Echis も同じ語根です。
Echidna comes from Greek ekhídna, meaning "viper" or "adder." The name was also used for Echidna, a snake-like monster in Greek mythology, and later it was given to the animal because of its strange, almost mythical appearance. The snake name Echis is from the same root.
