redevelopment の語源・成り立ち Etymology
redevelopment は re-「再び」+ development で、develop はフランス語 developper「包みをほどく」に由来します。隠れたものを開いて表に出す語なので、土地や計画をもう一度ひらくのが「再開発」です。envelop や envelope も同系です。
Redevelopment combines re- "again" with development. Develop came from French developper, originally meaning "to unwrap" or "unfold," so it first suggested bringing something hidden out into the open. From that sense, redevelopment came to mean opening up or rebuilding something again in a new form. Envelope and envelop come from the same family.
