quality はラテン語 qualitas「どんな性質か」に由来し、qualis「どんな種類の」が元です。quali-「どんな種類の」+ -ty「性質」で、物の“ありよう”を問う感覚が「品質」につながりました。qualify や qualitative も同根で、評価が分類に根ざすと見えます。
