古英語 hlaford からで、hlaf「パン」と weard「守る人」に分かれ、原義は「パンを守る者」。共同体の食料を握る家長が、そのまま支配者や主君を指すようになった。weard を含む ward, warden も同根。
Lord comes from Old English hlaford, which originally meant "loaf-guardian." It is made from hlaf "bread, loaf" and weard "keeper" or "guard." The idea was a person who protected and provided food for the household, and from there it grew into the meaning of a ruler or master. Ward and warden share the same old weard root.
