地位や立場、成功などを笠に着て、相手を見下すように偉そうに振る舞うこと。特に「lord it over」の形で、人に対して支配的にふるまったり、自分の優位をこれみよがしに示したりする場面で使われる。

古英語hlāford（パンの守り手→主人）からlordが生まれ、動詞化してlord over（支配する）となり、現在分詞-ingが付いた形。hlāf（パン）+weard（守る）が語源で、関連語はlady（パンをこねる人）、lord。「パンを分配する権力者」が原義。
