especially は especial + -ly ででき、especial はラテン語 specialis「特定の種類の」にさかのぼります。e- は古フランス語で添えられた音で、special や species と同根なので、「数ある中でその種だけを抜き出す」が「特に」へ育った語です。
Especially was formed from especial plus the adverb ending -ly. Especial came through Old French from Latin specialis, meaning "of a particular kind," from the same root as special and species. The word developed from the idea of picking out one kind from many. That is how it came to mean "more than usual" or "in a particular way".
