decided はラテン語 decidere「切り離して決める」に由来し、de-「離して」+ caedere「切る」から成ります。迷いを断ち切るのが本来のイメージで、decision や incision に同じ「切る」核を見れば、決断がなぜ鋭い行為なのか腑に落ちます。
Decided comes from Latin decidere, built from de- "off, away" and caedere "to cut." The original sense was to cut something off, and from there it came to mean ending doubt by cutting away other choices. Related words like decision and incision come from the same root for "cut."
