extreme（極端な）の副詞形と見ると覚えやすい語。中心から少し強めるのではなく、『端まで振り切れる』感覚が extremely。very より一段強く、quite / fairly よりかなり強い。extremely important, extremely difficult, extremely useful のように形容詞・副詞を強めるのが基本で、動詞を直接修飾する感覚は弱い。なお too は『〜すぎる』で、強調の強さが近くても意味は別だと切り分けると混同しにくい。
See it as `extreme` + `-ly`. If `extreme` means being at the far edge, `extremely` gives the feeling of going all the way to that edge, so it is stronger than `very`. It is often used before adjectives, as in `extremely important` or `extremely difficult`.
