An adverb is a type of word that adds information about a verb, adjective, another adverb, or sometimes a whole sentence. It often shows how, when, where, or how much something happens. This is a grammar term commonly used in language study.

adverb はまず verb を中心に考えると覚えやすい。文の中で「動きや状態をどう・いつ・どこで」を足す語で、run quickly, arrived yesterday, stay here の quickly / yesterday / here が典型。adjective が名詞を説明し、adverb は動詞・形容詞・他の副詞まで修飾できる、という対比で整理すると混同しにくい。語尾 -ly の形が多いが、fast や well のように -ly でない副詞もある点も一緒に押さえると記憶に残る。
Use `verb` as the center of the word: `ad-verb`. An adverb adds information around an action or state, often answering how, when, or where. Many end in `-ly`, but remember simple ones like `fast` and `well` too.

adverb はラテン語 adverbium に由来し、ad-「〜へ添えて」+ verbum「語」から成ります。もともと「動詞に添える語」という発想の名で、verb や proverb と同じ verbum を含むと分かると、役割が腑に落ちます。
